Itch Is a Symptom
Scratching treats nothing. The cause sits underneath. Three drivers account for most scalp itch: residue buildup, a weakened barrier, and yeast overgrowth. Each responds to a different intervention, so guessing wastes weeks.
Telling Them Apart
Buildup itch improves within a wash or two of proper scalp cleansing. Barrier itch comes with tightness and often follows harsh surfactants or heat. Yeast-driven itch arrives with greasy yellowish flakes and returns quickly after washing.
What Helps Each
For buildup, work shampoo at the scalp and clarify weekly with an exfoliating wash. For barrier loss, ceramides reinforce the lipid barrier and betaine binds water for comfort. For yeast, an antifungal is the evidence-backed route. An exfoliant will not resolve it.
When to Escalate
Persistent redness, pain or bleeding is not a cosmetic problem. Book a dermatologist rather than cycling through shampoos.
